Helldorado Day Celebration - May 17th, 2008

The Neon Museum's outdoor display of signs in the North Boneyard on Las Vegas Blvd. just south of Cashman Field will be open to the public Saturday, May 17 from 9 am to 2 pm. The cost for this event is $5.00 per person. Neon Museum staff and volunteers will be giving tours of the North Boneyard on the hour at 10:00 am, 11:00 am, 12 noon, and 1:00 pm. Normally admittance to the Neon Boneyard is by advance reservation only, for a fee of $15. The public day is part of the Helldorado Days Celebration.

Parking for this event is available in the rear of the Reed Whipple Cultural Center at 821 Las Vegas Blvd North. Once parked, please cross Las Vegas Blvd and walk down the small side-street to your right called McWilliams Avenue. Walk around the barricades at the end of McWilliams, and turn left onto Encanto. We will have the gate to the North Boneyard open with staff available to greet you.

The Neon Boneyard is home to some of Las Vegas' most important signs, which were rescued from demolition and are displayed unrestored. These include, among many others, the Golden Nugget, Binion's Horseshoe, and the Silver Slipper. The signs are available to be viewed at ground level and up close. Some of the signs are in sections as they were too large to move in one piece.

The Neon Museum has rescued and is restoring the La Concha Motel Lobby, designed by the internationally known architect Paul Revere Williams. When the La Concha and a small addition in back are completed in mid 2009, the Museum will be able to have regular hours instead of booking tours by appointment.

For more information log on to www.neonmuseum.org or call the office at 702-387-NEON (6366.) Office hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 5 pm.

The Fremont Street "Galleries"

Hacienda Horse and RiderThe Neon Museum officially "opened" with the installation of its first refurbished sign, The Hacienda Horse and Rider, on November 15, 1996 at the intersection of Las Vegas Blvd. and Fremont Street.

Today eleven refurbished signs can be seen 24 hours a day 7 days a week in outdoor "galleries" downtown. The first gallery is located in front of Neonopolis on the south side near the Horse and Rider and the other is on the 3rd Street cul-de-sac adjacent to The Fremont Street Experience canopy. Click here for a complete list of the signs you can see on a self-guided walking tour.

Neon Signs Displayed at Old Fort

The Neon Museum has formed a new partnership with our neighbor to the north, on the corner of Las Vegas Blvd and Washington-the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Historic Park (commonly known as the Old Fort.) The Old Fort has agreed to display some signs in its visitors' center, until such time as the Museum can display them.

Currently on display is the small Silver Slipper sign which once hung over the casino's back entrance; the letter "A" from the Sahara Hotel and more. The prize in the collection is the fully restored Society Cleaners sign, with its signature top hat and cane, a reminder of a more elegant era. The Gamette family, who operated their cleaners on Fremont Street for 60 years, donated the sign. Robin and Danny Greenspun paid for the restoration.

The Old Fort is open Monday through Saturday, 8 am to 4:30 pm. Admission is $3 for adults and teens, $2 children 6 to 12, under 6 admitted free. Information is at 486-3511 or click here for more information.
